Coronavirus COVID-19

Coronavirus is a name given to a group of viruses that cause respiratory infections. These include the viruses responsible for the common cold and severe acute Respiratory Syndrome.

The coronavirus pandemic is caused by a new virus identified as COVID-19. It was first diagnosed in December 2019 in Wuhan City, China.

What are the symptoms?

  • The common symptoms are fever, tiredness and a dry cough.

  • Some people may experience aches and pain, nasal congestion, runny nose, sore throat or diarrhoea.

  • Symptoms start gradually and are usually quite mild at the beginning.

  • There are a few cases where someone can be infected but not show any symptoms.

  • Most people feel better without special treatment.

  • According to the World Health Organisation 1 out of 6 people who are infected with the virus become seriously ill and develop breathing problems.

  • The people at most at risk are those with compromised immune systems, underlying medical problems such as diabetics and the elderly.

How does the virus spread?

It is spread from person to person through the droplets expelled from the mouth and nose when a person coughs or exhales.

The droplets from the exhale or cough will land on objects around the infected person. Another person could then touch these objects and then transfer the droplets from the object to their eyes/nose/mouth when touching their face directly after touching the object. It is also possibly to inhale these droplets and therefore it is advised to stay at least 1 meter away from an infected person.

How to protect yourself and the spread of the virus:

  • Thoroughly clean your hands regularly with alcohol-based hand rub or with soap and water. Your hands come into contact with many objects and if an infected hand touches the face the virus can be transmitted through the eyes/nose/mouth.

  • Keep 1 meter distance from anyone who is coughing. This can prevent you breathing in their water droplets that may contain the virus.

  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

  • Make sure that if you sneeze or cough that you do so into the crook of your elbow or into a tissue. Throw away the tissue afterwards.

  • Keep frequently used surfaces sanitized.

  • If you are feeling unwell, rather stay home. If you are experiencing a fever, cough and difficulty breathing phone a medical practitioner and explain your symptoms.

  • Stay updated on the hot spots of the virus and try avoid travel.
